Italy to Ban Vegan Diet for Kids?

This new law, if passed would mean that parents could face a year of jail time for simply feeding their child a vegan diet and up to 7 years if a child dies from being malnourished. But is a vegan diet dangerous for children? And what role should government play in these types of situations?
