But Don't You NEED to Count Calories?!

Whenever I talk about not dieting, not counting calories, and not weighing and measuring your food, I often get some push back. The question is usually something along the line of: "I mean eating a healthy balanced diet and not tracking everything sounds great, but don't you NEED to track your food to make sure you eat the right amount? You can't just eat unlimited amounts of food! What's to stop you from eating more than you need? This is a great question and one I think is important for us to discuss. I think this question really shows how dieting and the diet mentality are a part of our general culture and it reveals two main ideas about food and eating.

What I Eat in a Day | Healthy Meal Ideas from a Dietitian

One of the hardest parts about eating healthier can be figuring out what exactly you're going to eat. That's where this What I Eat in a Day video comes in! My hope is that this peek at what I eat as a dietitian will give you ideas and inspiration for your own healthy meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included.

Can Roasted Potatoes and Toast Cause Cancer?!

The Food Standards Agency in the UK recently launched a new campaign to educate people on the cancer risk associated with acrylamide and how to reduce exposure. Acrylamide is a naturally occurring substance and levels of it increase when starchy foods are cooked for too long at high temperatures. With this in mind, the campaign is recommending that people cook starchy foods like bread and potatoes until they are golden yellow or golden brown to reduce the amount of acrylamide that forms. So is this something to stress out about? Here are my thoughts.

Getting Back on Track with New Year's Resolutions

It's that time of year when all of the motivation and excitement around New Year's resolutions is fading and a lot of people are quitting or giving up. If you're in that boat, but also know that you don't want to find yourself making the same resolution again next year, I've got your back! Here are a few things to think about and try so you can get back on track with your resolution and reach your goals.

The Best Detox Diet and Cleanse

Detox diets and cleanses seem to be everywhere. Whether it's the Master Cleanse, a juice cleanse, or any of the other detox diets out there, the main idea is to eliminate or severely restrict the amount of the food you eat to give your digestive system a chance to rest and help remove toxins from your body. But how does the body detox in the first place and do these detox diets and cleanses actually work? I'm sharing all of that, plus the best detox diet out there. If you've been on my channel for a while, you probably already know what it is. ;)

The Problems with Khloe Kardashian's 'Revenge Body'

Just the name of the show Revenge Body sent up some red flags for me. Name aside, I looked more into the show and watched a lot of the preview clips they've posted online and I definitely have some thoughts about it. Overall, it seems to me that the show is based around a lot of messages about weight, appearance, and health that I think do more harm than good.

Eat Peanuts to Prevent Allergy? New Child Feeding Guidelines!

Food allergies are a big deal and everyone wants to know what we can do to prevent them. Some recent research has suggested that early and frequent exposure to peanuts could reduce a child's risk for developing a peanut allergy and we now have formal guidelines to go along with it! The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released new guidelines for introducing peanuts to kids based on a child's risk. Overall, these guidelines recommend early introduction, rather than delaying introduction of peanuts.

Is LaCroix Good for You?

LaCroix seems to be everywhere and lots of people love it. This carbonated water with fun flavors has taken over many shopping cart, but you might be wondering if LaCroix is good for you. Is it healthy to drink LaCroix or is there something to worry about? The first thing I like to look at with any food is if it's real food. In this video I'm giving you my thoughts on that, as well as people using LaCroix to cut back on soda.

What I Eat in a Day
Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown vlog

A Peek at Hamilton's World!

I'm trying something new here on this channel and I want to know what you think! I want to try uploading vlogs here every now and then when I go on a fun trip, go to a YouTube event, go to a food or nutrition event, etc. These would be extra videos in addition to my normal Tuesday/Thursday videos. This first one is from a trip Jasen  and I took to the Historic Triangle in Virginia. We went to Colonial Williamsburg, Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, the American Revolution Mueseum at Yorktown, Yorktown Battlefield, and Busch Gardens Christmas Town. It was a packed trip, but we had a lot of fun seeing so many historic places and listening to the Hamilton cast recording while driving between locations. :)

A dietitian's message about holiday eating (it's not what you think).

Today I'm sharing some of my thoughts on holiday food. This time of year can be tough if you're trying to eat healthy or are working on your relationship with food and now that Christmas is less than a week away, things are at their peak. With that in mind, I wanted to give you my message about holiday eating and navigating all of the food that's coming your way.

Is Granola Healthy?

Granola is often thought of as a health food and can have a kind of health halo. The word "granola" is even used to describe people, places, and things that are healthy or "crunchy." But is granola actually as healthy as a lot of people think? Not exactly. There are a couple things about granola that can make it not so healthy, so if you love granola you definitely want to keep these in mind.
